HomeUniversal travel adapter

Will a universal travel adapter work where you are going?

A universal adapter with US, Europe, UK and Australia pins fits sockets in 223 of 226 countries and territories. The exceptions are Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia. It changes the plug shape only, not the voltage.

Counts include sockets the pin enters without an earth connection. Check that your adapter has all four pin sets.

Where a universal adapter does not fit (3)

Type M and Type D sockets take none of the four universal pins. Pack a dedicated adapter for these.

Where only the Europe pin fits (105)

Here the two-pin Type C pin is the only one that goes in. That is fine for phones, laptops and other two-pin chargers. Type C is not earthed, so for an earthed appliance, check the country page for the right adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Does a universal travel adapter work everywhere?

Almost. With US (Type A), Europe (Type C), UK (Type G) and Australia (Type I) pins it fits sockets in 223 of 226 countries and territories. It does not fit in Eswatini (Type M), Lesotho (Type M) and Namibia (Type D/M), which need their own adapter.

Does a universal adapter convert voltage?

No. It only changes the plug shape; the local voltage passes straight through. Phones, laptops and chargers marked INPUT 100–240 V are fine. Single-voltage hair dryers and straighteners still need a converter or a dual-voltage model when crossing between 110 V and 220 V countries.

Do I need a universal adapter or a single-country adapter?

For one destination, a single adapter for that country is smaller and usually sturdier. A universal adapter makes sense for multi-country trips or if you travel often.

Where does only the Europe pin fit?

In 105 countries and territories, mostly in Europe, Africa and Asia, the Type C (Europlug) pin is the only one that fits. Type C is unearthed, so it suits two-pin chargers; an earthed appliance needs that country's own adapter.
