110V vs 220V: which countries use which?

The world runs on two voltage families. 37 countries and territories use 100–127 V ("110 V"), 185 use 220–240 V ("220 V") and 4 use both. Chargers marked INPUT 100–240 V work in all of them with just a plug adapter; single-voltage appliances only work in their own family.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 110V and 220V?

They are the two mains voltage families. 37 countries and territories, including the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan, use 100–127 V (often called 110 V). 185, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy, use 220–240 V. Within a family the figures are interchangeable for travel purposes.

Can I use a 110V device in a 220V country?

Only if it is dual voltage (the label says INPUT 100–240 V), which almost every phone, laptop and camera charger is. A single-voltage 110–120 V device such as many hair dryers needs a step-down converter, or it will be damaged.

Can I use a 220V device in a 110V country?

A dual-voltage device works with just a plug adapter. A single-voltage 220–240 V device needs a step-up converter, or swap it for a dual-voltage model.

Is 230V the same as 220V or 240V?

220, 230 and 240 V are the same family and interchangeable for travel purposes; likewise 100, 110, 115, 120 and 127 V.

Which countries use both 110V and 220V?

4 countries and territories have both in use: Belize, Brazil, Guyana and Liberia. Check the socket or ask where you are staying.
