Data sources and methodology

Every plug type, voltage and frequency on this site comes from a recorded source. Nothing is typed from memory, and the same dataset drives every page and every verdict.

Primary source

The International Electrotechnical Commission's World Plugs dataset, which listed socket types, voltage and frequency for 215 countries and territories. The IEC retired the interactive guide from its website in 2026; the last complete publication is preserved by the Internet Archive and is the copy used here.

Cross-check sources

Resolution rules

  1. Socket types are those listed by at least two of the three sources. A type listed by only one source is shown as "also reported" and is never used to tell you a plug fits.
  2. Voltage is the majority figure. Where sources disagree only between 220, 230 and 240 V the entry is recorded as 230 V, the IEC 60038 nominal that all three describe; the values are interchangeable for travel purposes.
  3. A country is recorded as mixed-voltage only when at least two sources list both voltage families, or an official national source says so.
  4. Frequency is the majority figure.
  5. The special cases below were checked individually against an official national source, which overrides the mechanical rules.
  6. Places absent from the IEC dataset are included only where WorldStandards and a second independent source agree.

The rules are applied by a script in the repository, which also writes the discrepancy log below, so the site cannot drift from the sources without the log changing.

Most of the south-east (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais) and the north use 127 V; the south (Santa Catarina, most of Rio Grande do Sul) and much of the north-east use 220 V, and many cities mix both. Check the socket label or ask your host. Sockets are the three-pin NBR 14136 standard (Type N), mandatory since 2011, which also accepts two-pin Type C Europlugs; the older Type A/B sockets have largely been replaced.
ItalyCEI 23-50 (Italian national standard for plugs and sockets) – summary via Wikipedia, cross-checked with WorldStandards Type L page (retrieved 2026-09-08)Italy's own standard is Type L (CEI 23-50), which comes in two incompatible sizes: 10 A (4 mm pins, 19 mm apart) and 16 A (5 mm pins, 26 mm apart). Most modern sockets are 'bipasso' (both L sizes plus Type C) or 'universal' (also Type E/F Schuko). Older buildings may only have narrow 10 A sockets, where a Schuko plug will not fit.
SwitzerlandSN 441011 (SEV 1011) Swiss plug and socket standard – summary (retrieved 2026-09-08)Switzerland uses Type J (SN 441011, formerly SEV 1011). Two-pin Type C Europlugs fit every Swiss socket. Grounded Schuko (Type F) and French (Type E) plugs do not fit the recessed hexagonal Type J socket. Type J looks like Brazil's Type N but they are not interchangeable.
DenmarkDS 60884-2-D1 / DS 107-2-D1 Danish plug standard – summary (retrieved 2026-09-08)Denmark's own standard is Type K (DS 60884-2-D1). Type C Europlugs fit and work normally. Type E/F (Schuko and French) plugs physically fit a Type K socket but make no earth connection, so grounded appliances lose their safety earth. Schuko (Type F) sockets have been permitted in new installations since 2011 and French Type E sockets since 2008, but Type K remains by far the most common.

The large three-round-pin Type M (SANS 164-1) is still the most common socket. The compact Type N (SANS 164-2, the 'ZA plug') has been required in every new installation since January 2018 and is the intended replacement; Type N sockets also accept Type C Europlugs. Expect a mix of both, and carry a Type M adapter to be safe.
ThailandTIS 166-2549: Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes (Thai Industrial Standards Institute, 2006) (retrieved 2026-09-08)Thailand's official standard is Type O (TIS 166-2549), a three-round-pin plug rated 16 A. In practice most sockets are hybrids that take Type A, B and C plugs as well as Type O. Schuko (Type F) plugs fit the hybrid sockets but are not earthed, and sale of appliances with E/F plugs has been banned.
United KingdomVoltimum UK – Socket-outlets for shavers (BS 4573, BS EN 61558-2-5, BS 7671) (retrieved 2026-09-08)The UK uses the fused three-rectangular-pin Type G plug (BS 1363) everywhere. The only exception is the shaver socket found in hotel bathrooms: a two-pin BS 4573 outlet, often switchable between 115 V and 230 V, limited to about 200 mA. It will run an electric shaver or toothbrush charger but nothing more powerful. Types D and M survive only for stage lighting and remotely switched lights.
GuyanaGuyana Power and Light Inc. – Who we are (retrieved 2026-09-08)Guyana is unusual: the national utility supplies either 110 V or 220 V depending on the area, and both 50 Hz and 60 Hz exist on its grid. Check the socket label before plugging in anything single-voltage. Sockets are mostly Type A/B; Type D and G are also reported.

Many older buildings have only ungrounded Type A sockets. A separate 220 V supply exists for air conditioners and ovens but is not used for ordinary sockets.
LiberiaLiberia Electricity Corporation – Specification 22 & 33 kV/LV Distribution Transformers (October 2021): 50 Hz, secondary 400 V; 120 V / 60 Hz per IEC dataset, Wikipedia and Electrical Safety First (retrieved 2026-09-08)Liberia's supply is genuinely mixed. The national utility's current distribution standard is 230/400 V at 50 Hz, but the older 120 V, 60 Hz US-style supply still exists in much of Monrovia and the sources disagree on which you will meet. Sockets are a mix of US Type A/B and European Type C/F. Treat every socket as unknown until you read its label, and bring dual-voltage devices only.

Plug compatibility

Which plug fits which socket comes from the IEC type definitions (for example: the Europlug "fits into any socket that accepts 4.0–4.8 mm round contacts on 19 mm centres"; "the Australian plug also works with sockets in China"; Type J "is incompatible with the Type N socket") plus the national standards for Denmark (Type E/F plugs enter Type K sockets without earth), Italy (bipasso and universal sockets), Switzerland (Europlug fits all Type J sockets), Thailand (hybrid A/B/C/O sockets) and South Africa (Type N sockets accept the Europlug). Update policy

Plug and voltage standards change rarely and slowly (South Africa's Type N transition and Thailand's Type O phase-in are the live examples). The dataset is re-verified against the sources above once a year, and immediately if a reader reports an error via the contact details. The site was built on 8 September 2026.

R2 voltage = majority figure; 220/230/240 disagreements harmonise to 230 V (IEC 60038 nominal). R3 a country is recorded as mixed-voltage only when at least two sources list both bands (or an official source does, via R5). R4 frequency = majority.
