About this site

Need an Adapter? answers one question: will my stuff work when I travel, and what do I need to buy if not? Pick two countries and what you are bringing and you get the answer above the fold, with the reason in one sentence.

Every fact comes from the IEC World Plugs dataset, cross-checked against two independent sources and the relevant national standards. The methodology page lists every source and every discrepancy.

Who builds this site

Need an Adapter? is built and maintained by David Owen, based in Adelaide, South Australia, who builds the checker and runs the yearly data re-verification. David Owen is not an electrician or electrical engineer, which is why every plug type, voltage and frequency here is traced to a source you can check yourself on the methodology page, and why nothing is typed from memory.

How it makes money

When a verdict says you need an adapter or converter, the page shows links to buy one. Those are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. They never change the verdict and they only appear when you actually need something. There are no accounts, no email capture and no tracking beyond privacy-respecting page analytics.

Report an error

If a socket type or voltage is wrong for somewhere you know well, tell us and include what you saw on the wall or the label. Email hello@needanadapter.com, which goes straight to David Owen. Corrections are checked against the sources and logged.

Who publishes this site

Need an Adapter? is published by Cactus & Cubby Marketplace (ABN 28 316 231 089), an independent Australian business based in Adelaide. It is not affiliated with the IEC, any standards body or any adapter manufacturer.
